The introduction of the session helps
the Trainees relax, gains their attention, tells them what they are going to do
and why.
We
use the mnemonic INTRO to remember
the structure.
I - INTEREST
Gain
the Trainee’s interest, put the Trainee at ease. Reassure Trainees their work
will be taken care of, or that they will have sufficient time.
Ways of gaining
interest:
§ Ask
questions
§ Show
finished product (good or bad example)
§ Show
picture
§ Tell a
brief story (historical, geographical, or personal experience).
§
Do a brief role play
N - NEED
Why they need to know
how to do the task. Explain to the Trainees the benefits to them:
§ Change in
standards
§ Legal or
safety standards
§ New
knowledge or skills
§ Part of
college course
§
Preparation for promotion
T - TASK
What
Trainees are going to do. Tell the Trainee what the task is. For example: “How
to skirt a trestle for our conference room” and not: “All about trestles”.
R - RANGE
How
long is the session and what is the process. For example: “This session will
last approximately 20 minutes. I’ll
provide you with explanations and show you. Then you will have the opportunity
to practice.”
O - OBJECTIVE
What
will the Trainee achieve? Give a clear and concise description. For example:
“So Mary, at the end of this training, you will be able to complete a sundry
voucher in accordance with our departmental standards.”
